Community leaders held a press conference near Doral City Hall on Tuesday, demanding the city end its 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Agreement Status
The Doral City Council approved the 287(g) agreement last year, and the city signed it in January. The program authorizes designated local police officers to carry out limited federal immigration enforcement duties. However, no Doral officers have been trained under the program as of the press conference.
Broader Context in Florida
There are currently 379 active 287(g) agreements across Florida, including several in Miami-Dade County. Some municipalities, including Miami Beach and Miami Gardens, have not signed such agreements. South Miami challenged the requirement in court, but a state judge dismissed the lawsuit.
