The Miami-Dade School Board approved an operations agreement for Success Academy to open charter elementary schools in unused space at five district high schools. The board also gave the district authority to lay off up to 133 employees if needed.
District estimates put the cost of the co-location at up to $7.9 million for the 2027-28 school year. The planned campuses are North Miami, Hialeah-Miami Lakes, Homestead, Miami Jackson and Westland Hialeah senior high schools.
Florida’s Schools of Hope law requires districts to make certain underused schools available to approved charter operators. The agreement item states that board approval reflects consideration of statutory requirements, not an endorsement of the proposed charter schools.
