Miami-Dade correctional officer Renel Troutman faces federal charges alleging involvement in drug smuggling and inmate gambling.
A federal complaint alleges Troutman helped conceal drugs, including in a food delivery arranged to test whether contraband could get into a jail facility. It also alleges he enabled inmates to place wagers through a gambling operation; one person allegedly gambled $2,400 while incarcerated under his watch.
The charges include conspiracy to possess narcotics with intent to distribute, Hobbs Act extortion under color of official right, and racketeering promotion. Troutman has been relieved of duty pending the investigation. The FBI is investigating, and the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department is conducting an administrative review.
