Attorneys for death row inmate William Thompson asked a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge Tuesday to hold an evidentiary hearing on whether he is competent to participate in proceedings tied to his scheduled execution.
The Herald reported that Gov. Ron DeSantis had already temporarily stayed Thompson’s execution and appointed three psychiatrists to examine him by Oct. 1 after his attorneys raised concerns about dementia. If the panel finds Thompson understands why he is under a death sentence, the execution would proceed as scheduled Oct. 13 at Florida State Prison in Raiford.
The Herald also reported that Thompson’s lawyers challenged Florida’s lethal-injection protocol as applied to him. Thompson was convicted in the 1976 killing of Sally Ivester in North Miami Beach.
