A coalition of 50 organizations has organized coordinated events across seven states demanding the immediate restoration of Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants in the United States.
Senate Legislation and Federal Demands
The mobilization, branded as “Days of Action to Restore Haiti TPS,” is scheduled to run from Thursday through Sunday. Organizers are urging U.S. Senators to co-sponsor Senate Bill 4814, which would extend Haitian TPS for three years. The coalition is also calling on the Department of Homeland Security to halt arrests and deportations of former TPS holders and to reinstate the designation for Haitians.
TPS was recently terminated for Haitians following a legal dispute. The program, created by Congress in 1990, allows nationals of designated countries to live and work legally in the U.S. when conditions in their home country are deemed unsafe for return.
