South Florida siblings charged in alleged Subway purchasing kickback scheme

Federal prosecutors say Janet Risi Field, 66, of Pinecrest, and her brother Steven Louis Risi, 70, of Coral Gables, were indicted Thursday in a case involving Subway franchisee purchasing. Risi Field is the former CEO of Independent Purchasing Cooperative, which managed purchasing and supply-chain services for Subway franchisees.

Prosecutors allege that brokers for IPC vendors shared contract fees with Risi Field and family members, and that shell companies were used to conceal more than $60 million in bribe and kickback payments. The alleged scheme cost franchisees more than $80 million, authorities said.

Both siblings face charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and two counts involving transactions in property derived from unlawful activity. Risi Field also faces wire fraud charges and a wire fraud conspiracy count.
