Former U.S. Rep. David Rivera is scheduled to be sentenced Friday in Miami by U.S. District Judge Melissa Damian. A jury convicted him of conspiracy and violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act in a case involving work for Venezuela’s government.
Rivera’s lawyers are asking for no additional prison time or a sentence of no more than a year and a day; he has already spent about four months in custody. Prosecutors are seeking a significant prison term. Rivera has submitted about 50 letters of support from relatives, friends and former political colleagues.
