22 newly indicted defendants in the 2021 assassination case of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse made their first appearance Monday in Miami federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisette Reid.
The charges were read, court-appointed attorneys were assigned, and prosecutors sought pretrial detention hearings for all but one defendant, arguing they were flight risks. Bond hearings and arraignments were scheduled to begin Friday.
The report says the defendants include 17 former Colombian soldiers and former Haitian official Joseph Félix Badio. They were transferred to Miami from Haiti on Sunday and face charges including conspiracy to kidnap or kill a person outside the United States. Five additional newly charged defendants were not yet in custody. The case has already produced four convictions, and U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Becerra is set to preside over related proceedings.
